Sandskull
Sandskull is a brand of beer based in Brighton. They put out a competition through a local pub asking for a complete branding of the beer bottle (label and cap).
The mandatory requirements are as follows:
- Wrap around label for a 330ml bottle
- Metal Bottle cap
- Beer crate and paper packaging
They wanted a skull to be the focal point of the brand but could be used and interpreted in whatever way the designer/artist wanted.
After meeting one of the founders and talking to him about what the brand was about, Sandskull struck me as a DIY, relaxed, fun brand that didn't take themselves overly seriously and who were very passionate about their hometown of Brighton.
For this brief I wanted to come away from my usual digital approach and work in a different way. The best way for me to visualise my ideas for the skull was to begin sketching them out and then pick the most effective.
I scanned in the ones that received the most positive feedback in crits and expanded upon them by adding colour and different compositions.
The style for the logo was drawn heavily from the Mexican day of the dead festival as Brighton has its own summer parades and festivals which are very decorative and in someways tribal.
Once I had a logo I was happy with I began to work on the type which I hand drew to to link it to the hand rendered aesthetic of the logo.
The began paring the type with the logo until it looked how I wanted.
The bright colours I had been using didn't communicate that it was a brand of beer and instead made it look more like a soft drink so have decided to go over the possible colours to use.
