BRIEF 06: DR.ME Workshop / Six Tapes

DR.ME

DR.ME are a graphic design duo located in Manchester who mainly focus around collaged imagery for various client briefs. To me they are an especially interesting studio as they work within the music industry, creating posters for festivals, gigs and collaborating with record labels.

Workshop

Following the talk, a brief was set to create something you could send out to design studios as a way of getting you name out there. DR.ME said this was a very effective way of getting attention and had got them noticed in the past and created job opportunities.

Our collective Jarg People decided to work together on this brief and send out a cassette tape from each of us with our own artwork on them and tracks we wanted them to hear.

A direction we decided to go was to play on the fact that there would be six of us sending out tapes so the name of this project was Six Tapes. As it sounded similar to sex tapes we thought we would play to this and go with a humours tone of voice as the studio DR.ME seemed to also have a similar attitude to their projects. To avoid being overly crude we cut out images of advertisements from magazines taking them out of context and made them seem more suggestive than they originally were.

Series of different experiments using the cut out images and playing with colour and type to make the designs pop out and engage with the viewer.

Final designs mocked up, will decide which one to send off through peer feedback and crits.

Creative Networks Daft Punk Poster

What is Creative Networks?

High profile speakers come in to discuss their creative journey or a disscussion around a theme/subject.

One hour of networking prior to the talk in an event space set up by students picked for the brief.

To enter 2x posters must be submitted for upcoming talks.

Winner gets to create posters for the rest of the year and setup event space which includes vinyl branding, beer labels, floor stickers, flyers ect.

Two speakers

Daft Punk

Andrew Graham-Dixon

Working with two other students we allcocated sections of the brief to work on to maximise the short time period we had been given. The three elements were the two posters for each of the speakers and a motion graphic of the Creative Networks logo as part of an introductuon to the talks. As the speakers were very different (art historian and electroinic music producers) we felt that the posters should refect that and be individual to the person/s.

Daft Punk Poster Design

The idea for this was to create an asthetic and way of physically working which matched Daft Punks way of producing. After some research we found that they come from a cut and paste background using samples of other tracks to create their sounds put together in a very organised and structured way. The visual image to Daft Punk is iconic, mainly down to their robot outfits worn when they perform.

Across all their existing album artwork and music videos they have a mechanical feel, yet the music still has a natural human touch through thier funk and disco influences.

To capture this metallic dystopian look I began scanning in grainy and metallic textures from magazines which could use to collage into their iconic helmets - somthing I thought would be key for the poster.

Selected appropriate textures by looking for the right shades and materials and then cutting out the sections and applying them to the shape of the mask.

Added a synth for the visor to make the image more visually interesting and again linking the poster to how Daft Punks music is made. Because of the short time period the poster will be submitted digitally, however to extend on the design the visor would be screen printed a metallic gold alongside certain areas of the helment foiled silver.

The type on the poster was kept as minimal as possible as not to detract from the image. The typeface is a simple sans serif which again doesn't distract from the helmet which is the main focal point of the poster.
