Two speakers
Daft Punk
Andrew Graham-Dixon
Working with two other students we allcocated sections of the brief to work on to maximise the short time period we had been given. The three elements were the two posters for each of the speakers and a motion graphic of the Creative Networks logo as part of an introductuon to the talks. As the speakers were very different (art historian and electroinic music producers) we felt that the posters should refect that and be individual to the person/s.
Daft Punk Poster Design
The idea for this was to create an asthetic and way of physically working which matched Daft Punks way of producing. After some research we found that they come from a cut and paste background using samples of other tracks to create their sounds put together in a very organised and structured way. The visual image to Daft Punk is iconic, mainly down to their robot outfits worn when they perform.
Across all their existing album artwork and music videos they have a mechanical feel, yet the music still has a natural human touch through thier funk and disco influences.
To capture this metallic dystopian look I began scanning in grainy and metallic textures from magazines which could use to collage into their iconic helmets - somthing I thought would be key for the poster.
Selected appropriate textures by looking for the right shades and materials and then cutting out the sections and applying them to the shape of the mask.
Added a synth for the visor to make the image more visually interesting and again linking the poster to how Daft Punks music is made. Because of the short time period the poster will be submitted digitally, however to extend on the design the visor would be screen printed a metallic gold alongside certain areas of the helment foiled silver.
The type on the poster was kept as minimal as possible as not to detract from the image. The typeface is a simple sans serif which again doesn't distract from the helmet which is the main focal point of the poster.
